Aims and Fit of Module

1)       To give students an overview of China's past and present, and highlight the continuity of a "living tradition" and its changes by applying the analytical principles that can be found in the field of humanities and social sciences.
2) To enable the student to understand where China’s experience fits into the social science literature. This understanding is developed by examining the extent to which concepts that are key to the social sciences are applied in and to China. In the process China’s experience is used to reflect on the development of the social sciences.

Learning outcomes

Students completing the module successfully should:
A Have a broad understanding of China’s development in comparative perspective.
B Be able to discuss key concepts in the social sciences and their application to China
C Have a basic understanding of the foundations of China Studies as an academic pursuit
D Understand the logic and the limitations of social science as an approach to understanding China

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures to provide overview of weekly topic; seminars to rehearse this information; tutorials to discuss concepts and their applicability to China.
Some sessions on this module will be delivered by Language Centre tutors, with the aim of assisting students with language/study skills requirements for the module. Students will also be provided with online language/study skills support to help them engage with module content.
