Aims
This module may only be taken as a substitute for Classical Chinese 1 by students who do not meet the language entry requirement for that module.

To introduce students to the literary language of classical Chinese texts from ancient as well as medieval times, as well as the essentials of grammar, phonology, and historical linguistics.

Learning outcomes 
A Be familiar with the range and scope of Classical Chinese texts

B Have an understanding of the essentials of Classical Chinese grammar

C Begin to understand Classical Chinese phonology

D Obtain an overview of Chinese historical linguistics

E Be able to build on the module foundations to read Classical Chinese texts in the original
