Aims and Fit of Module

To provide students with a detailed understanding of the society and cultures of West China, as well as its regional development and the literature on internal development

Learning outcomes

A	Develop understanding of the society and cultures of West China
B Appreciate the history of state policy in West China, both to regional development and to the development of local communities
C Awareness of the major debates about development in general and West China in particular
D Be able to formulate policy and practical prescriptions for local development
E Understand the complexity of interactions between different peoples and different parts of West China
F Understand the role of West China and its people’s in the development of Chinese society and history
G Appreciate and explain ethnic differences in West China
H Awareness and understanding of the literature on West China and its peoples.

Method of teaching and learning

This module is taught across the semester through lectures for rehearsals of weekly topics and seminars for presentation and group discussions. The module now includes a more focused series of tasks including class participation, essay preparation, seminar presentation and research essay.
