This module aims at making first year students conversant with key terminologies that provide an introduction to urban studies. This module is to prepare students for majoring urban planning and design by understanding basic vocabularies in this discipline. This module provides an overview with a wide range of topics in urban studies including the environment, transport, urban development, urban design and planning policy.
Learning outcomes 
Students completing the module successfully should:

A Understand basic terminologies and key concepts in urban studies.

B Make good use of the concepts and vocabularies in spoken and written ways.

C Relate the vocabulary taught in this module to general topical areas in urban studies
Method of teaching and learning 
The module, which will be co-delivered with the Language Centre (LC), seeks out easy and interesting ways to explain academic and theoretical concepts for the students who start studying urban planning and design. Lectures provide various leaning materials such as images, audios, and texts. To explain difficult terminologies, easy materials will be used.

Group activities and active participation will be encouraged in concert with courseworks. The individual coursework and the group coursework, involved with written and spoken activities, will help students improve their understanding of key terminologies. This module will be designed to encourage students to make good use of the terminologies taught in this module for their essay, presentation and discussion.

Weekly lectures will be delivered by UPD, while weekly seminars to help students engage with lecture content will be delivered by the LC. The LC will support students in developing academic writing and effective oral discussion skills associated with the two assessments.

This module includes five essential topical areas in urban planning and design. In these five themes, key terminologies will be discussed. The five themes are:

1. Transport (e.g., infrastructure and global/regional/local transportation)

2. The Environment (e.g., natural environments and environmental planning)

3. Urban Development (e.g., housing, the urban economy, and urban forms)

4. Urban Design (e.g., mapping, drawing, and spatial vocabulary)

5. Planning, Governance and Policy

Group activities will be encouraged for effective learning and the group coursework.
