Aims
This module aims to provide an introduction to the history, theory and practice of town and country planning in the UK.
Learning outcomes 
A. Explain the chronological growth and development of town planning in the UK;

B. Comprehend the operation of the current planning system;

C. Distinguish key planning issues in the UK.

D. Discuss selected issues in contemporary planning theory and practice.



Method of teaching and learning 
This module seeks to provide a varied learning experience combining lectures, tutorials and discussion.
Syllabus 
• Introduction to the module and town and country planning in the UK context


• The industrial revolution and its impacts/ early history of planning ideas



• The birth of modern British planning, the evolution of British planning systems and the current planning systems in the UK




• Key issues in UK planning practice


(including issues such as agencies and urban governance, sustainability and environmental planning, economic change and regeneration, urban design and conservation/ heritage, transport and retail/town centres)
