Module Level Level 0
Module Credits 2.50

Aims and Fit of Module

The module is designed for Year 1 undergraduate students in Built Environment with particular interest in civil engineering and architectural engineering. It covers practical work, design activities, drawing skills, communication skills, sustainable development principles, project management, health and safety and risk management, and other transferable skills. The overall aim of the module is for students to achieve following learning outcomes.

Learning outcomes

A.	Understand the role of civil engineers, architects and urban planners and designers in the built environment.
B. Understand characteristics and civil engineering features of some iconic and historically important projects in different sub-disciplines of civil engineering.
C. Learn basic concepts in engineering drawings and apply them to draw 2D views of a 3D object.
D. Build model structures using given limited resources, rules and other information and to investigate the performance of models considering the behaviour in different condition.
E. Develop skills on group work, communication, poster design, poster presentation and maintenance of an individual logbook.

Method of teaching and learning

The content of this module will be delivered by lectures and practical classes. Fundamental concepts in civil engineering, basic technical skills in engineering drawing and introduction to case studies in civil engineering will be delivered through lectures. Communications and model building skills will be delivered through practical sessions. Delivery of some sessions will be assisted by Language Centre tutors in order to support students with language/study skills. Students will also be provided with online language/study skills support to help them engage with module content.
