 Aims This module aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of finite element method and software applications for structural analysis problems.
 Learning outcomes A. Apply fundamental engineering principles and analytical techniques used in computer software for structural analysisB. Analyze structural problems using stiffness methods with truss elements and/or beam elementsC. Compare the differences between finite element solutions and analytical solutions for general differential equationsD. Develop Galerkinâ€™s method in finite element proceduresE. Predict the structural behaviour and failure of engineering structural systems using plastic analysis.
 Method of teaching and learning Lectures complemented by computing lab sessions.
 Syllabus 1 - 4 Basic concepts of the finite element method. Shape functions. Direct Stiffness Method for trusses. 5-6 Introduction to Finite Element Analysis software. Interaction with the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Tabular and graphical (sculpt) input. Preparation of input data. Element types. Beam section types and database. Materials library. Loading and boundary conditions. Graphical view and save options. Limitations of computer analyses. Assessment, interpretation and verification of numerical results.7-10 Flexure Elements. System with mixed truss and beam elements. Galerkin classical method. Galerkin finite element method for differential equations. Galerkin finite element method for trusses/beams.11-13 Plastic analysis of structures: Bending beyond yield point, Plastic moment of a section, Plastic hinges, General theorems of determination of collapse loads. Examples of simple and continuous beams.
