Structural Behaviour

Module Title Structural Behaviour
Module Level Level 2
Module Credits 2.50

Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to introduce a strong foundation to qualitatively analyse and understand a given structural analysis problem considering the behaviour of the structure as well as its engineering application.

Learning outcomes

A. Apply fundamental concepts of statical determinacy to geometrical stability analysis of trusses, beams, and frame structures.
B. Establish deflection shape, by bending moment diagram, and shear force diagram qualitatively without performing calculation and thereby understand structural behaviour.
C. Analyze and understand the behaviour of structures under various loadings, loading combinations and variations of member properties.
D. Predict the structural behaviour and failure of engineering structural systems beyond the elastic limit.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures complemented by tutorial sessions
to cover main theory, illustrations of qualitative analysis, examples, and tutorial questions.
