This module aims to introduce the factors which influence the selection of materials for engineering purposes, to develop understanding of the properties of these materials, and to lay a foundation for subsequent design work.

Learning outcomes 
A. Assess the factors influencing the selection of the most appropriate material for a particular civil engineering purpose.

B. Compare the manufacturing processes, physical/mechanical/engineering properties of widely used construction materials such as aggregate, concrete, masonry, timber and metal.

C. Judge the most relevant test method used to evaluate the performance of a given construction material considering the application of a particular material and the availability of test standards.

D. Design a concrete mix proportion considering given requirements and restrictions.

E. Analyse a set of experimental data to produce a quantitative/qualitative conclusion and hence to evaluate the properties of the given material.

Method of teaching and learning 
The material in this module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures and practical sessions.

Introduction to general construction materials:

- Basic properties of materials, Importance of materials and selection of materials based on economic, engineering, performance and constructional criteria.


- Cement: History, Production method, Physical and chemical composition and properties, Properties of cement paste.
- Aggregate: Fine and coarse aggregate, Aggregate classification, Physical and mechanical properties.
- Concrete: Composition, Concrete mix design, Chemical admixtures and their effect, Fresh and early age properties of concrete, Strength development, Role of each material in concrete, Mechanical properties of concrete and their measurement, Durability performance and design of structural concrete, Reinforced concrete.
- Sustainable materials: Introduction to green concrete, Recycle aggregate, Light weight aggregate, Pulverized fuel ash (PFA), Fly ash, Silica fume, Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), Other cement replacement materials and fibres.


- Types of masonry, Materials and manufacturing of clay masonry, Properties, Mortar. Construction of masonry structures.


- Production including growth, Seasoning and sawing, Engineering properties, Grain, Effects of species and moisture, Protection and preservation, Construction applications of timber, Sustainability in selection of structural timber.

Plastics and Glass:

- Categories of plastic including chemical composition, Basic physical properties and applications in construction.

Industrial metals and alloys:

- Use of metals in structural applications, Steel (normal and high strength), Aluminium alloys.

Lab class:

- Laboratory experiment for aggregate testing and Concrete mixing.
