Advanced Soil Mechanics

Module Title Advanced Soil Mechanics
Module Level Level 3
Module Credits 2.50

Aims and Fit of Module

To advance students’ knowledge in soil mechanics by introducing practical geotechnical design problems, and to develop their skills in the design of some typical geotechnical works (mainly piles and retaining structures).

Learning outcomes

A. Distinguish between various types of piles in geotechnical design and the typical pile construction methods.
B. Assess the impact of changes in pore water pressure on the stability of geotechnical structures.
C. Calculate the vertical resistance of single piles and group piles in geotechnical design.
D. Determine lateral earth pressure imposed on retaining walls.
E. Investigate quantitatively the stability of retaining structures (such as gravity, embedded, propped/anchored retaining walls) and provide geotechnical design solutions for these retaining structures.
F. Analyse experimental results of triaxial tests and determine their validity and accuracy.

Method of teaching and learning

The material in this module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and supervised practical sessions.
