Learning outcomes 
A. Apply principles of foundation design and construction including pads, strips, piles, pile caps

B. Assess stability and failure behavior of different foundations under various loading conditions

C. Apply knowledge and skills in the design of gravity foundations and retaining walls.

D. Compare foundation designs by using computer software analysis and manual calculations

Lecture 2 – Pad foundation

1. Determine the size of the pad

2. Calculate the ultimate soil bearing pressures

3. Assume a base depth and carry out preliminary punching shear check
