The aim of the module is to combine students’ engineering knowledge of analysis and design within a unified design project and to develop students’ competency in teamwork and awareness of the various activities involved in the planning, management, design and construction of the engineering project.
Learning outcomes 
A. Take part in group exercises with the intention of sharing responsibilities and knowledge in achieving a realistic design scheme for the required structure taking into account relevant constraints.

B. Evaluate conceptual and planning issues affecting a schematic design.

C. Develop feasible design solutions by evaluating the buildability, economical, environmental, sustainability as well as health and safety issues involved in the construction project.

D. Select appropriate construction materials and perform detailed calculations that satisfy the design constraints and efficiency requirements of the selected scheme structure.

E. Use approximate hand calculations as a mean of validating output of computer-based analytical outputs.

F. Prepare group design project report including conceptual design, detailed calculations and drawings.

G. Produce oral presentation of final concept and engineering solution and present ideas to clients in a professional manner.

Method of teaching and learning 
The module is taught through formal lectures and class tutorials.
Lectures Descriptions

1 Introduction and analysis of the group design exercise. Project goals, design requirements/methodolgy, constraints and layout of the construction site. Types of structural form. Design process and organisation. Relevant design standards and codes of practice.

2 Conceptual and scheme design on architectural and structural aspects of the project. Evaluation of the viable structural solutions for the construction. Selection of construction materials. Safe construction procedure and robustness. Presentation of sketches and diagrams to illustrate the engineering system.

3 Combination of actions and loading arrangements. Advanced computational analysis. Verification of structural viability. Development of full structural or civil engineering design and calculation for the selected structure. Presentation of drawings including all relevant (important) dimensions and illustration of plans, elevations, cross-sections and details of the design.

4 Assessment of site variability and ground conditions. Geotechnical design solution and foundation scheme for the structure.

5 Sustainability appraisal and environmental impact assessment. Management, maintenance and serviceability of the structure. Health and safety and risk assessment. Bill of quantities and construction project cost estimation.
