The aim of the module is enhance critical assessment of the environmental impacts associated with industrial projects, through the principles of sustainable/low cost wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution control, soil and groundwater contamination control and management as well as through policy and legal aspects.
Learning outcomes 
A. Be able to identify and assess the environmental impacts of Civil Engineering projects and recognise the practical requirements for wastewater and solid waste management, soil and groundwater contamination control and air quality monitoring.

B. Be able to assess and manage the health issues and environmental impacts related to wastewater re-use including for agriculture

C. Be able to apply common analytical techniques used in air quality monitoring and appraise the impact and implications of air pollution from industrial processes.

D. Be able to firmly understand the processes associated with solid waste management and appraise the impacts related to landfilling and incineration

E. Be able to evaluate land remediation technologies and appraise the impacts of groundwater contaminant transport

F. Be able to conform to the legal aspects and policies related to the assessment of environmental impacts.

1 Introduction to Environmental Engineering: Civil Engineering and the Environment, Recognition and appreciation of environmental impacts from engineering projects, Ecosystems, Pollution, Concepts of sustainability, Renewable and non-renewable resources.

2 - 3 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Auditing, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Management Techniques, Environmental Design

4 - 5 Sustainable wastewater treatment: Environmental impacts of wastewater treatment. Low cost wastewater treatment systems; Introduction to Natural Wastewater Treatment (NWT) systems; aerobic and anaerobic waste water stabilization ponds (WSP); ; physical design and operation of WSPs..

Wastewater reuse and discharge: Introduction to wastewater reuse and discharge; Effluent quality; Guidelines for wastewater reuse in agriculture; Rural, urban and peri-urban wastewater irrigation; Suitable NWT technologies to meet effluent quality standards for restricted and unrestricted irrigation.

6 - 7 Solid waste sources and characteristics. Waste recycling, waste incineration, landfill design and operation. Waste stabilization, leaching processes, anaerobic degradation and landfill gas production.

8 - 9 Air pollution: Introduction to Air Pollution, Impact, Legislation and Standards, Air Pollution Measurement, Prevention of Air Pollution, Air Pollution Modelling, Particulate Matter, Volatile Organic Compounds, Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides.
