Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to provide the fundamental knowledge of statistical science required for research in the engineering disciplines.
The module is open and can be taken by all Master’s students to partially fulfill the requirements for Additional Learning Activities.

Learning outcomes

A	Gain knowledge of the three major types of statistical analysis used in engineering research – Descriptive statistics, Inferential statistics, Predictive statistics
B Appraise the various statistical methods used for data analysis, hypothesis testing and statistical modelling.
C Evaluate the suitability and applicability of the various statistical methods for given engineering problems.
D Apply statistical theory in the analysis of engineering data.
E Ability to analyse data, extract qualitative and quantitative information and present key elements of the analysis in a written report.

Method of teaching and learning

Learning and teaching is achieved through formal lectures and practical classes associated with each lecture.
