Aims
This module aims to build student awareness of research techniques, approaches and results for emergent technologies.


The module is open and can be taken by all Master’s students to partially fulfill the requirements for Additional Learning Activities.
Learning outcomes 
A Knowledge of the direction of development of civil engineering research, and how it is evolving to meet clients’ needs.

B Ability to assess the potential application of emergent technologies within a civil engineering context.

C Be able to critically evaluate the potential range of applications of new technologies in the context of and in comparison to existing techniques

D Ability to compare and contrast new and existing technologies and generate clear summarised recommendations for their potential application.

Method of teaching and learning 
Invited talks from industry professionals and senior academics to introduce modern research topics, where they can be applied and the direction of research as it is driven by the industry
Syllabus 
13 weekly invited talks from research active academic staff and industry professionals exposing students to:


• Pertinent information required for generating high quality research.

• Detailed information on emergent technologies and techniques

• Introduction to cutting edge research topics and their potential applications

• Assessment of the cost/ legal/ environmental etc. constraints on new techniques

• Consideration of the ethical constraints for research.
