The module is intended for students who have some previous knowledge of the Chinese language (A1+ or equivalent) and it will progress in the study the Chinese language and culture. The module will broadly achieve an outcome at level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

• To consolidate and widen further the knowledge of the Chinese language, including grammar and lexis.

• To enhance communicative proficiency in Chinese, in both writing and oral (presentation and interaction).

• To develop further listening and reading skills.

• To broaden the knowledge of contemporary China

• To develop intercultural awareness of China and Chinese speaking cultures.

All the Chinese modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Chinese modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.

Learning outcomes 
A Be able to demonstrate understanding of short, simple narratives when spoken clearly and slowly in the target language.

B Be able to demonstrate understanding of short, simple texts on familiar subjects in the target language, which consist of high-frequency, everyday or university-related vocabulary.

C Be able to use the target language to give a brief oral presentation about factual in-formation, as well as to ask for and give opinions, or agree and disagree, in a simple way.

D Be able to use the target language to write about their everyday life in simple sentences.

Method of teaching and learning 
Communicative language teaching involves a high level of interaction between teacher and students. Teaching and assessment will revolve around the setting and completion of specified language tasks.

This module includes 2*4 hours seminars per week. Students will have 8 hours per week of integrated skills class, covering reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The lecture, which is a large group practice and review session, will be designed to support student learning in and after class.
The syllabus will develop the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writ-ing. The topic will cover social activities, sports and health, entertainment and culture. A good command of the grammar points in the related textbooks: Road to success: elementary 1&2 and lays a sound grammatical foundation.

There will be six main tasks to complete, and each task contains four sub-tasks:

Task One: Daily life (including making a phone call, shopping, renting an apartment, going to a restaurant )

Task Two: Campus life (including study habits, language partner, life habits, taking HSK test)

Task Three: Transportation and Travel (including travel, booking air tickets, travelling ex-perience, ways of travelling)

Task Four: Social Communication (including celebrating one’s birthday, calling on some-body, visiting a patient, meeting somebody at the airport)

Task Five: Sport and Health (including sports games, losing weight by doing exercises, outdoor activities, the World Cup football games)

Task Six: Entertainment and culture(including Christmas party, watching a Chinese movie, riding a bike, Beijing opera)
