Aims
This module is designed to provide students with the technical skills required to operate

camera and lighting equipment to enable them to produce work of excellent technical quality and to establish safe working practices.
Learning outcomes 
A. Operate at a basic and safe level when setting up and using camera and lighting equipment

B. Demonstrate the potential to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a practical project environment.

Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching sessions are divided into three components (Lectures, technical screenings and practical workshops).


Lectures will focus on camera and lighting terminology and technique.


Technical screenings will allow technical discussion about cinematography and practitioners.


An intensive series of practical workshops will equip the students with the technical skills and understanding of the relationship between the camera and forms of natural and artificial lighting. The workshops will also instruct the students with safe systems of work, basic electrical safety and practical troubleshooting during equipment use.


Students work in independent small groups to each produce a short silent film incorporating natural and artificial lighting. The project parameters will be outlined in a project brief.

Lighting: natural v artificial

Lighting equipment and techniques

Screenings – techniques of great DoPs
