This module introduces students to the culture, history, technologies, and theories of new media. It involves an exploration of the interplay between new media technologies, industries, and contemporary society. It is an aim of this module to introduce students to contemporary cutting-edge research and practice in the field.
Learning outcomes 
A Understand the nature of new media, and its relationship to socio-cultural changes;

B Understand the interplay between new media technologies, businesses, and people’s everyday lives;

C Understand different theoretical approaches to new media studies;

D Demonstrate the ability to use new media theories in their own writing in the field of media and cultural studies.

Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching sessions consist of two components – lectures and tutorials.
In the lectures, students will be introduced to new media theories.

Tutorials, on the other hand, will focus on the application of these theories and practical know-how. The tutorials are geared towards preparing students for their writing.
The syllabus will typically comprise the following subjects:

• Technological determinism;

• Domestication theory;

• Cultural circuit;

• Diffusion theory;

• Mediation;

• Affordances;

• Mass self-communication;

• Attention economy;

• Mobile interface;

• Locative media.
