Aims and Fit of Module

This module seeks to introduce students to the increasingly important field of adaptation, not only from literature to screen, but across the media. It will introduce students to the concepts of intermediality and intertextuality and their applications in the process of content transfer from one medium into another. Similarities and differences between the task of the translator and that of the adapter will be analysed, and students will be introduced to a variety of case studies, so as to become familiar with key procedures and techniques. The module highlights the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dimensions of adaptation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will:


A.Understand the history of adaptation studies and the key issues that have moved the debate forward, and demonstrate this by providing examples of representative work in each period and devising their own examples.

B. Gain clear insight into the mechanisms of adaptation and demonstrate this by doing a basic adaptation of their own

C.Account for the role adaptation has had in preserving, transforming and updating a wide range of cultural products.

D.Develop the ability to construct and defend an argument related to the debates surrounding the notion of adaptation
