This module is designed to:

Enable students to understand the process from script to screen and use a range of techniques to realize a short directed sequence.

Enable students to demonstrate the ability to work with actors and communicate with a film crew whilst filming a short visual sequence.

Enable students to demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their decision making and place it within a historical context
Learning outcomes 
A. Understand the role of the director in the production process and within the realization of a given scene/project

B. Demonstrate the practical skills of directing within the context of a short narrative sequence

C. Demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a project based activity

D. Inform practice by placing it in an historical and conceptual framework
Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching sessions are divided into three components (Lectures, technical screenings and practical workshops).

A series of lectures will provide the historical and conceptual background to understand the director and his/her process

Screenings will allow the students to discuss the work of some of the great directors

Practical workshops will focus on the process of working with actors, performance and visual storytelling
Typically, the syllabus for this module will cover:

Screenings of directors’ work.

How a director prepares for a shoot.

Researching and referencing other directors and films.

The director’s understanding of a film’s aesthetic.

A director’s recce.

Director’s script break-down and storyboard.

Working with actors – pre-production and on set.

Working with technical crew– pre-production and on set.

Continuity and the 180 degree rule on set.

The director in a post-production context
