Aims and Fit of Module

This module serves as a methodology foundation for COM305 Final Year Project.
It aims to 1) introduce students to the nature and process of media and communication research; 2) familiarize students with main concepts of research strategy, research design, data collection and data analysis; 3) expose students to a variety of research techniques used in media and communication research (e.g., survey questionnaires, in-depth interview, participatory observation, as well as content analysis and textual analysis); 4) encourage

Learning outcomes

A	Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and process of media and communication research;
B Become familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods and assess their advantages and disadvantages;
C Identify and apply relevant research methods for data collection and data analysis;
D Evaluate the significance and quality of research publications;
E Demonstrate skills in designing and conducting media and communication research.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are consisted of two components, i.e. lectures and tutorials.
In the lectures, students are familiarised with each week’s module materials.
Tutorials, on the other hand, focus on implementation and practical know-how. The tutorials are geared towards preparing students for the research proposal and group projects.
