Aims and Fit of Module
This module will provide an overview of the main theoretical approaches to the study of film, ranging from the early debates surrounding realism and formalism, to later schools of thoughts, including feminist theory, semiotics, auteur theory, genre criticism, psychoanalysis, cognitivism and phenomenology. These different theoretical perspectives will be explored via relevant case studies.
Learning outcomes
A. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the core theoretical debates in film studies
B. Apply theoretical concepts to the analysis of individual films
C. Situate individual films in their socio-cultural contexts and show awareness of the intricate ideological and economic processes involved in the films’ production and reception.
D. Critically evaluate the theoretical developments brought about by digitisation.
