Aims

This module will engage students in the study and practice of film and television editing and post-production. Students will develop an understanding of post-production workflows and of digital delivery requirements and standards. Students will also examine the historical and theoretical contexts of post-production as well as explore in depth key post-production software and practices through the production of individual practical project work.
Learning outcomes 
A demonstrate the ability to critically analyse examples of film and television editing through drawing on critical and theoretical texts;

B understand the histories, conventions and styles of film and television editing;

C undertake a post-production practical project.


Method of teaching and learning 
Lectures and practical hands-on workshops in media editing labs.
Syllabus 
The syllabus will typically include:

• The history of film editing;

• Early sound;

• Influences and pioneers of film editing;

• Changing styles of editing;

• The goals of editing – narrative, drama, subtext and aesthetics;

• Editing for genre;

• Principles of editing;

• Non-linear editing and digital technology;

• Practical workshops exploring video editing software packages;

• Post-production workflow and methodologies;

• Post-production software workshops, using VFX;

• Colorisation and treatment.
