To facilitate an understanding of the structure and functioning of health systems, drawing on relevant interdisciplinary perspectives and providing tools by which to analyse health systems.
Learning outcomes 
A Discuss the concept of a ‘health system’, and its core objectives, elements and functions.

B Identify the sociopolitical factors influencing health systems.

C Compare the ability of different health care systems to promote and manage population health.

D Outline the ways in which health systems can be evaluated.

E Employ a health systems approach to examine major health challenges in a range of different health care contexts.

Lectures and Seminars in addition to 98 hour (XJTLU required) field work internship..
Part I The Structure of Health Care Systems

Week 1 Defining Health Systems through systems analysis

Introduction to the module and the concept of a health system, as well as systems thinking

Week 2 Core structures of the State Health Care system

Introduction to the elements of health systems, including infrastructure and resources

Week 3 Administrative Levels of Analysis: State, Regional, Local

Overview of the different functional levels of the health system

Week 4 Coordination between Administrative levels

Examination of the coordination between the structural levels of health systems.

Part II The Management of Health Systems

Week 5 The core priorities of health systems

Overview of aims and goals of health systems

Week 6 Assessing Efficacy, Effectiveness and Efficiency of Health Systems

Critical Analysis of the monitoring and evaluation of health systems

Week 7 Health Financing

Examination of the modes in which health care services are financed

Week 8 Balancing Health Care Resources with Population Needs
