This course aims to provide the student with a foundational understanding of the causes and approaches to controlling environmental health issues.
Learning outcomes 
A Describe the normal cycles of ecosystems.

B Differentiate between the major sources and types of environmental pollution.

C Examine how pollutants interact with the human body.

D Appraise environmental risk assessment and risk management processes.

E Assess the role of legislation and regulation regarding environmental issues.

F Analyse how environmental health programs are developed, managed and evaluated.

This module will be delivered through lectures and seminars.
Part I The Healthy Environment

Week 1 Introduction to Environment: Cycles I

Introduction to natural processes in the environment.

Week 2 Environment Cycles II

Introduction to the concept of the ecosystem and ecology.

Week 3 Exposure and Dose

Assessment of the relationship between exposures, dose and body responses in environmental health.

Part II Disruptions in the Healthy Environment

Week 4 Environmental Toxicology

Overview of the different toxic agents in the environment and their affect on human health.

Week 5 Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution

Overview of the primary toxic chemicals involved in indoor and outdoor air pollution.

Week 6 Water: Sanitation and Pollution

Examination of the primary sources of water pollution and the primary means of water sanitation.

Week 7 Soil Safety

Assessment of the pollutants affecting soil and the ecosystem and food chain in general.

Week 8 Food Safety

Overview of the field of food safety. The health safety of the production and manufacturing processes of food will be reviewed. Part III Environmental Health Management

Week 9 Environmental Risk Assessment, Management and Communication

Critical examination of how environmental risks are assessed, managed and communicated to the public.

Week 10 Hazardous Waste Management

Introduction to the management of hazardous wastes including municipal, industrial and hospital waste.

Week 11 Management of Environmental Disasters

Overview of environmental disaster management with case examples.

Week 12 Environmental Policy and Law

Critical assessment of environmental protection through the regulation and enforcement of policies and laws.

Week 13 Complex Processes in Environmental Health: Climate Change

Examination of environmental health through case examples of climate change.
