This module aims to provide students with an understanding and appreciation of the field of mental health in relation to the promotion of the complete well-being of populations.
Learning outcomes 
A Examine concepts fundamental to the study and promotion of population mental health.

B Critically assess the normative framing and diagnosis of mental illness.

C Appraise the context and cultural appropriateness of different mental health systems and services.

D Formulate recommendations for mental health service that will meet the needs of particular groups.

Lecture, small group discussions in seminars and tutorials will be utilised.
Part I Understanding Mental Health and Mental Health Services

Week 1 A public health framework of Mental Health

Introduction to the global incidence, prevalence and burden of mental health disorders.

Week 2 Historical development of the field of mental health

Overview of mental health as a public health issue from “Bedlam” to present day mental health services.

Week 3 Classifying Mental Health

Introduction to how mental health has been normatively understood, assessed and treated.

Week 4 Current Diagnostic Criteria: DSM V

Introduction to current diagnostic criteria for mental health disorders; the DSM V.

Week 5 Critical Perspectives of Mental Health

Assessment of mental health critiques, including those from Foucault, Szasz and medical anthropology.

Week 6 The Risk Environment for Mental Health

Examination of the effect of environment, society and culture on mental health.

Week 7 Comparative Mental Health Systems

Examination of mental health services in several countries.

Week 8 Appropriate Mental Health Services

Planning appropriate mental health services with a special consideration of stigma.

Part II Mental Health Services for Vulnerable Groups

Week 9 Mental Health and The Homeless: Chicken or egg?

Overview of the relationship between homelessness and mental health.

Week 10 Violence and Mental Health

Examination of the prevalence of domestic and community violence particularly directed toward women.

Week11 Substance Abuse & Addiction

Introduction to public health management of addiction.

Week 12 Mental Health for Acute Population Emergencies.

Introduction to the needs of and services for populations experiencing acute emergencies such as conflict and natural disasters.

Examination of the relationship between mental illness and the legal system.
