Aims
This course will synthesise the knowledge the student has accumulated throughout the BSc in Public Health programme with application toward “real world” health care challenges.
Learning outcomes 
A Judge how best to prioritise health care needs in a given situation.

B Determine the best use of available resources and the best means for securing other resources in a population health intervention.

C Devise how to engage with stakeholders in a given interventional context.

D Employ monitoring and evaluation for a population health intervention.

E Appropriately design a population health intervention.
Method of teaching and learning 
Lecture, laboratory, discussion and fieldwork. Students will be divided into small groups in which each student will collaborate on designing and implementing a public health intervention. Each student in each group will have an opportunity to carry out all of the various roles designed for the intervention. Students will then evaluate and offer recommendations to improve their team's intervention.
Syllabus 
Part I Health Care Planning: From Assessment to Policy

Week 1 Planning Health care: from Assessment to implementation

Review of the stages of healthcare planning including: initial assessments, policy-making, implementation
and evaluation.

Week 2 Assessing Population Health Need

Examination of how to assess the needs for a health intervention in a given context, including the initial
evaluations to be conducted.

Week 3 Assessing Community Assets

Review of importance of assessing the assets and strengths of health capital already present.

Week 4 Incorporating Stakeholder Analysis into the Policy Process

Review of how to perform and stakeholder analysis and its relevance to the policy process.

Part II Health Care Planning: From Policy to Implementation

Week 5 The Phases of Health Care Implementation

Overview of how health care interventions can be classified in terms of stages.

Week 6 Determining and Designing the Elements of the Intervention

Exploration into how to choose the type of intervention to design and how to design it; including choosing
the intervention team and holistic programming that includes physical and mental health.

Week 7 Working with the Community

Critical examination of community-led versus community-participated interventions. Exploration into
which community members are acknowledged as stakeholders; how the intervention protects the
community and community dynamics; as well as how local knowledge may be incorporated.

Week 8 Incorporating the Built-Environment

Overview of the elements of urban/rural planning and civil engineering pertinent to implementing public
health interventions.

Week 9 Issues of Implementation I: Managing Stakeholder Agendas

Exploration of challenges that present during the implementation of an intervention with a focus on
stakeholder cooperation and compliance with funder agendas.

Week 10 Issues of Implementation II: Management of Resources

Exploration of challenges that present during the implementation of an intervention with a focus on the
management of resources.

Week 11 Monitoring

Review of the appropriate methods of monitoring for the given interventional context.

Week 12 Evaluation

Review of the appropriate methods of evaluation for the given interventional context; particularly in terms
of efficacy, efficiency and effectiveness.

Week 13 Ensuring Sustainability

Critical Assessment of the methods to ensure that an intervention is ultimately sustainable
