Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the basic principles of human growth and development from the prenatal period through senescence using a longitudinal, lifespan approach.
Learning outcomes 
A Formulate a basic understanding of the human life course and human development and their relationship to the health of populations.

B Organise linkages between growth & development, health needs, and the health care system.

C Critically appraise the effectiveness of health care systems to address and manage the particular life stage health needs of a population.

Part I A Lifespan Approach to Population Health

Week 1 The Lifespan Approach to Health

Introduction to lifespan approaches to health.

Week 2 Lifespan Concepts: Developmental Determinants of Diseases

Discussion of developmental determinants of disease in adults.

Week 3 Lifespan Concepts: Measuring Health Status across the Lifespan

Discussion of health status measurement techniques and tools across the lifespan.

Part II Public Health at Specific Life Stages

Week 4 Maternal Child Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common Maternal Health concerns.

Week 5 Prenatal Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in specifically the prenatal period.

Week 6 Child Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in children with a focus on diarrhoeal and upper respiratory tract disorders.

Week 7 Adolescent Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in adolescents with a focus on eating disorders.

Week 8 Men’s Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in adult males with a focus on Cardiovascular diseases.

Week 9: Women’s Health

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in adult females with a focus on cancers.

Week 10 Sex, Gender and Health

Discussion of the concepts of sex and gender and their relationship to health with a focus on HIV/AIDS and gender violence.

Week 11 Ageing

Discussion of aetiology, clinical features, public health management and prevention of common conditions in the elderly with a focus on Alzheimers Disease.

Week 12 Depression across the Lifespan

Discussion of the relationship between depression and particular life stages and events.
