Aims and Fit of Module

The student is expected to conduct research in an approved topic related to the modules offered under the MSc Economics degree.  The research must demonstrate analytical, quantitative as well as qualitative skills.  Depending on the focus, the dissertation will combine both theory and empirical work in varying proportions.  The research must demonstrate intellectual depth in at least one area from mathematics, statistics or pure economic theory or information technology.

Learning outcomes

A	Demonstrate the ability to conduct original research in economics. 
B Interpret and communicate knowledge in economics based on research at the frontiers of economic knowledge.
C Successfully complete a substantial piece of independent research presented in the form of a dissertation.
D Demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in a specific subject area in economics.
E Demonstrate persistence in the face of research related setbacks.
F Demonstrate the ability to apply tools and skills acquired in the MSc Economics modules to analyze and solve a specific set of economic problems.

Method of teaching and learning

Independent study punctuated by regular meetings with supervisor and active participation in research seminars. Meeting with supervisor (and relevant faculty) anticipates completed research drafts as per pre-agreed schedule set out by dissertation supervisor.
