This module will provide an in-depth overview of the fundamentals as well as modern techniques of optical fiber communication systems. It will include system design considerations and component operation.

Learning outcomes 
A. Understand the technology of fiber optical communication systems and networks, including identifying the elements of the fiber optic transmission link.

B. Have a solid knowledge of the fundamental principles, techniques and design methodology of optical fiber system, including being able to calculate and simulate the important design parameters.

C. Have a solid knowledge of photonic components, their design and application in optical communication systems.

Method of teaching and learning 
This module is delivered through lectures, tutorials.

Problems are embedded in lectures and example sheets available to the students.

Knowledge of the lecture material is tested by the use of the XJTLU student response system.
