Aims and Fit of Module

To provide an introduction to the state of art wireless communication systems

Learning outcomes

A. Understand the effects of noise upon radio system behavior and performance.
B. Understand radio wave propagation and math modeling.
C. Understand some of the methods used to combat the adverse effects of wireless propagation in communications systems,
D. Understand the principles of mobile radio system design, and apply the knowledge to analyze and evaluate the transceiver performance of a cellular radio system and to predict the coverage of a base station transmitter.
E. Understand how digital cellular systems have developed; especially the operating principles and system architectures of 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation cellular systems, their relative advantages and disadvantages, and the services available from these systems.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures and tutorials.
