Power Electronics and Applications for Renewable Energy

Module Title Power Electronics and Applications for Renewable Energy
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

•	Give the students basic knowledge of the design and manner of operation of power electronic converters.
• Give the students a broad understanding of the vital role of power electronics in introducing renewable energy, in the power system and how it may enhance energy saving.
• Through problem solving, laboratory exercises and projects the students shall develop a physical understanding of the theory presented in the course.

Learning outcomes

A.	Gain knowledge of converter topologies, the control methods (current mode/voltage mode) used in switch mode converters, different converter topologies with respect to a given application, suitability and applicability of passive and active power electronic components.
B. Design a converter for a given application; perform calculations/simulations on the feedback circuit in switch mode converters;
C. Analyze voltages and currents in the circuit. Continuous - and discontinuous conduction mode. Isolated converter topologies.
D. Methods for analyzing converters (AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC) including resonance converters for design.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures and laboratory practical. The laboratory experiments will involve the use of the MATLAB language and other software tools for power electronics. After each laboratory, students will prepare a brief report for assessment.
The final module mark will be derived from a combination of the laboratory reports and a formal written exam.
