Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to introduce students to the critical issue of reliable transmission of multimedia contents over non-reliable networks, where data transmission may suffer from packet losses, bit errors, packet delay & jitter and out-of-order packet delivery, and provide an overview of various techniques to counter those effects of networks with focus on robust coding and error concealment.

Learning outcomes

A. Gain critical insight into the effect of non-reliable networks on the transmission of multimedia contents through them.

B. Build mathematical and simulation models for packet losses and delays to systematically investigate their effect on multimedia data.

C. Define the characteristics of multimedia data, especially their vulnerability to bit errors and packet losses in the network.

D. Select and apply error resilient techniques to given multimedia applications and network environments.

E. Carry out multimedia delivery projects with proper planning and management.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures and supervised laboratory sessions.
