Aims and Fit of Module

•	to introduce students to fundamental methods in which language can be described and analysed;

•	to apply the above methods to the English language, examining the structures of English with particular reference to its vocabulary, grammar and use;

•	to place language in a social, cultural and historical context with the focus on function  and situated meaning;

•	to equip the students with a broad understanding of linguistic topics and the related career options.

Learning outcomes

A.   understand basic linguistic ways to examine language structure and language use

B. identify the key aspects of word classes, word structure and lexical semantics and have an initial understanding of the origin of words in English;

C. analyse English sentences in terms of their phrase structure and clause structure; 

D. determine the relationships between form, meaning and function of language in use;  

E. construct context-appropriate utterances and texts in English;

F. reflect on the interaction between language use and cognition;

G. have a broad understanding of linguistic topics and the related career options.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and seminars.
