Aims and Fit of Module
The main aims of the module are:
To provide students with an understanding of the principles of semantics and pragmatics;
To equip students with knowledge of key issues in semantic theory and pragmatic analysis;
To develop an understanding of the relationship between semantic content and pragmatic interpretation
Learning outcomes
Upon the completion of the module, students should be able to
a. Engage critically with theoretical perspectives,
b. demonstrate an understanding of some aspects of philosophy of language,
c. Apply semantic and pragmatic concepts, including the difference between sentences and utterances, sense relations and speech acts;
d. Analyse linguistic content from semantic and pragmatic perspectives
