Aims and Fit of Module

•	To analyse authentic samples of language in use; 
• To encourage a critical attitude towards registers and genres;
• To introduce frameworks for the analysis of spoken and written texts.

Learning outcomes

A. develop an ability to apply analytical approaches and techniques to analyse and interpret linguistic and discourse features of authentic English texts;
B. reflect critically on the written and spoken language used in a variety of contexts;
C. undertake a reflective analysis of their own speech or writing in a specific context, drawing on corpora and other data;
D. develop an understanding of functional approaches to the analysis of genres and registers;
E. compare and contrast language choices in different varieties of texts by successfully using software for the identification of textual features

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Tutorials/workshops).
