Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims 
• to introduce students to a wide range of phenomena related to English as a global language at both global and local levels;
• to introduce students to some key conceptual and theoretical resources useful for understanding these phenomena;
• to enable students to apply their knowledge and understanding gained in this module to critically assess some major historical, cultural, and/or sociolinguistic issues arising from published papers in the field (e.g. those published in English Today)

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this module, the students will 
A. develop an understanding of the important concepts (e.g. World Englishes, and ELF) surrounding the study of English as a global language;
B. demonstrate a good knowledge of the wide range of phenomena (e.g. stakeholders’ attitudes) related to English as a global language;
C. reflect critically on some of the major historical, cultural, and/or sociolinguistic issues concerning English as a global language; and
D. analyse variation in a selection of world Englishes.

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Tutorials/workshops).
