Aims
The main aims of the module are:

• to introduce students to some syntactic theories/ approaches to grammar

• to equip students with methods for analysing phrase, clause and sentence structure

• to apply methods of description and analysis to language at the syntactic level.

• to explain linguistic phenomena in terms of syntactic approaches.
Learning outcomes 

A.Demonstrate knowledge of some key aspects of syntactic theories and approaches to language, including Generative Grammar.

B.Demonstrate an ability to analyse language at phrasal, clausal and sentential levels.

C.Evaluate some key assumptions of approaches to grammar

D.Apply syntactic theories to linguistic phenomena.
