Aims and Fit of Module

• to introduce students to a wide range of phenomena related to bilingualism at both global and local levels;

• to introduce students to some key conceptual and theoretical resources useful for analysing these phenomena;

• to equip students with an understanding of the research methods frequently employed in studies of bilingualism and beyond; and

• to enable students to apply some of these methods to exploring some aspect of bilingualism

Learning outcomes

A	gained an understanding of the concept of bilingualism and the various theoretical issues surrounding the study of bilingualism


B	Demonstrated a good knowledge of a wide range of phenomena related to bilingualism at both global and local levels


C	demonstrated the ability to identify some of the major historical, psycholinguistic, and/or sociolinguistic issues related to bilingualism, especially those concerning China and/or professional communication and translation


D	conducted a meaningful discussion about policies and practices relevant to bilingualism in the education sector


E	developed an understanding of the various methodologies employed in researching bilingualism


F	designed and implemented a small-scale research study to explore some aspect of bilingualism
