Aims and Fit of Module

•	To increase students’ awareness of how language works in texts, particularly in prose fiction and drama;
• To provide students with an understanding of the principles of literary linguistic analysis and theory;
• To develop students’ ability to recognize the relationship between linguistic form and inferred meanings;
• To enable students to analyse the language of prose fiction and drama and explain how meanings are constructed;
• To demonstrate the use of corpus linguistics tools for the analysis of prose fiction and drama.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module, students should be able to:
A. respond to and analyse prose fiction and drama using linguistic concepts;
B. identify and consider how meanings and effects are created and conveyed in prose fiction and drama;
C. select approaches to literary linguistic analysis which are most appropriate for the analysis of particular texts;
D. use adequate metalanguage to carry out a linguistic stylistic analysis of prose fiction and drama;
E. relate the findings of linguistic analysis to a possible interpretation of these texts;
F. identify patterns of thought and speech presentation in prose fiction and drama;
G. focus on some of the basic mechanisms of conversation to understand dramatic dialogue;
H. undertake corpus stylistics analysis by successfully using software for the identification textual features.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching component will be divided into lectures and tutorials.
