The module focuses on three interrelated areas:

How we teach: language teaching methodology;
What we teach: the language itself.
This module provides an introduction to any course leading to the professional certificate in teaching English as a foreign language or Master’s degrees in English education, linguistics and applied linguistics.

Learning outcomes

On completing this module students will be able to:
A. understand and reflect critically upon the various theories of language teaching and learning underlying current practice in teaching English as a foreign language, for example, by drawing on their own experiences as language learners to interrogate these theories;
B. apply these theories in the investigation of classroom-related issues and problems, for example, through the evaluation of a set of teaching materials in the light of recent theories of language, language teaching and language learning;
C. construct a cogent written argument in the form of a written assignment, based upon a range of reference sources and discussing the findings from a piece of individual analysis or research, for example, an empirical case study of a language learner.
