Aims
• To enhance student understanding of the principles of research and their application;


• To equip students with the principles concerning research design, data collection, data analysis, and research ethics in applied linguistics and related fields


• To prepare students for the design and writing of a 15000-word dissertation.
Learning outcomes 
A. Adopt for use research methods common in applied linguistics and related fields

B. Apply techniques of research design, data collection, analysis and interpretation ethically

C. Show an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of the use of techniques

D. Develop methodologically sound research proposals



Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and tutorials/workshops.
Syllabus 
Topics will typically include:


PART I: Research Skills:

• Fundamentals of research

• Qualitative research

• Establishing research problems and questions

• Research design


PART II: Data Collection and Analytical Skills:

• Quantitative research: statistical concepts and applications (e.g. t-test, correlations, analysis of variance)

• Classroom research: field research considerations and techniques

• Computer-assisted research: issues and possibilities

• Combining different types of research

• Data collection, analysis, interpretation and triangulation


PART III: Research Reporting Skills:

• Writing a literature review

• Writing a methodology chapter

• Writing a results or analysis chapter

• Writing abstracts, introductions, and conclusions

• Research proposal writing

• Ethics
