Aims and Fit of Module

The main aims of the module are:
• To develop an understanding of the theoretical framework of English lexicon;
• To provide students with an understanding of the important role vocabulary plays in second language acquisition and performance as well as the pedagogical implications for vocabulary teaching in the classroom;
• To develop students’ understanding of L2 learners’ vocabulary acquisition process;v • To acknowledge students of the current literature of L2 learners’ lexical development;
• To acquaint students with the methodologies to identify essential lexical features that could facilitate language learning, teaching and testing.

Learning outcomes

Upon the completing of the module, students should be able to:
• have an in-depth understanding of compositions of words and definition of a word;
• understand different strategies of vocabulary learning;
• apply knowledge of lexis to the teaching of spoken and written English
• make appropriate judgment of pedagogical approaches to vocabulary teaching and identify specific features to focus on in vocabulary teaching in classroom;
• design and develop assessments to measure L2 learners’ vocabulary growth

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and tutorials/workshops.
