Aims and Fit of Module

The main aims of the module are:
• To introduce the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), with a focus on English for Academic Purpose
• To identify and explore the main contexts of ESP work in academic, professional and workplace contexts
• To set out the main issues and concepts in the context of the historical development of ESP
• To introduce students to the theoretical foundations of ESP
• To introduce students to pedagogy and materials development in ESP/EAP
• To provide students with practical experience designing materials and teaching in academic or vocational setting
• To introduce students to methods for conducting ESP research

Learning outcomes

Upon the completion of the module, students should be able to:
• demonstrate a good understanding of theoretical perspectives and
teaching approaches to ESP, with a focus on teaching EAP at the tertiary context; • acquire the skills of teaching EAP;
• design ESP/EAP curriculum and develop ESP/EAP teaching materials;
• develop an informed research approach to ESP teaching in classroom and workplace settings;
• analyse English texts of professional contexts for teaching purposes

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and tutorials/workshops.
