Aims and Fit of Module

To give a broad conceptual overview of the physical systems of the Earth as a planet 

To give an outline of Earth’s ocean-atmosphere interactions, emphasizing the complex  interactions between these systems 

To provide a foundation for geoscience modules in the 2nd and 3rd years 

To introduce students to various information sources, including library and internet-based. 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 

a. Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and function of the atmosphere and hydrosphere of planet Earth, and an understanding of the inter-relationships between those systems

b. Understand how to collect their own measurements of the sun’s radiation, to analyze the atmospheric structure and circulation and to differentiate climates 

c. Learn how to analyze local water budget and ocean circulation data. 

d. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and drivers of past climatic variability and the associated impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Method of teaching and learning

Weekly lecture sessions, supported by class notes and reading lists, provide the main means of delivering information to students.  Lectures are supported by biweekly practical exercises designed to test knowledge and understanding of key concepts. Some sessions will be delivered by a LC tutor, to assist students with language/study skills requirements for the module.
