Aims and Fit of Module

This module will provide training in a range of field and laboratory ecological skills in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Field skills developed will build on lecture material introduced in other Year 2 modules, and will include field sampling, survey and identification of plants, animal communities and measurement of selected ecological processes. The students will learn quantitative skills in field ecology and how they can be used to solve fundamental and applied ecological problems.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the field class students will be able to: 


A. Demonstrate technical competence in a range of field sampling methods in aquatic and terrestrial environments. 

B. Apply a variety of qualitative and quantitative approaches to field sampling. 

C. Collect, describe and identify common plants and animals, and relate them to environmental factors and different habitats. 

D. Demonstrate the ability to work safely in the field, and effectively as a team. 

E. Analyse, interpret and present field research results.

Method of teaching and learning

The purpose of the module is to provide ecological skills in field sampling techniques, collection and description of plants and animals in relation to specific environments. Students will participate in lab sessions and local field trips to gain initial skills in freshwater and terrestrial field techniques. Students will also experience a week-long residential field trip, over the course of which they will work in groups to apply the field techniques in a range of terrestrial and freshwater settings. Field activities will be followed by lab sessions, data analysis and interpretation, culminating in written reports and presentations.

*Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.
