Aims and Fit of Module

To introduce students to the causes and timescales of climate change,
To introduce students to different methods of examining and dating landscape evolution as a response to Quaternary climate change,
To discuss and debate the relationships between humans and environmental change on short, medium and long timescales.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Describe, and critically evaluate, the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of proxy records that are available for reconstructing Quaternary climate change
2. Recognise the significant role of environmental change in the development of human society on short, medium and long timescales
3. Assess the nature of recent, current and future climate and environmental change, and understand the vulnerability of modern society to climate and environmental change
4. Undertake laboratory analysis of ecological records of environmental change and present an interpretation of a range of data in an appropriate environmental change context
