Aims and Fit of Module

To introduce students to the topics of aquatic ecology and urban ecology as well as the interaction of these disciplines and their importance for urban growth.

Learning outcomes

A. Gain a comprehensive knowledge of aquatic and urban ecology, and how both disciplines interact. 

B. Evaluate methodological approaches for surveying habitats, designing experiments, and analysing data related to aquatic and urban biodiversity and ecosystem services.

C. Explain the impact of human disturbance on ecosystem processes and services in both aquatic and urban ecosystems.

D. Demonstrate how biodiversity varies between and within cities and how urbanisation influences natural resources. 

E. Evaluate trade-offs in ecosystem services’ delivery in aquatic and urban environments and their effects on human wellbeing.

F. Apply interdisciplinary approaches for studying urban ecosystems.

Method of teaching and learning

Topics are introduced through lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work, and journal club (meetings to discuss papers form scientific journals).

*Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.
