Aims and Fit of Module

1. To introduce the fundamentals of air pollution 
2. To discuss major pollutants, their sources and their effects (environmental, economic and health)
3. To introduce the methods of estimating air pollution emissions
4. To introduce the theory of dispersion of air pollution in the atmosphere
5. To discuss the major approaches for air pollution modelling
6. To demonstrate the features and the use of most widely used commercial and freely available air quality models
7. To introduce the issues of indoor air pollution and personal exposure to air pollution
8. To gain an appreciation of the health impacts of air pollution.

Learning outcomes

A	A basic understanding of the fundamentals of air pollution including knowledge on atmospheric circulation, transport, dispersion and transfer of air pollutants
B An understanding of how climate change and meteorology influence air pollution
C Knowledge of major air pollutants, their sources and their effects (environmental, economic and health) and how emissions are estimated from road traffic and industrial sources
D An insight into air pollution in China
E Experience of using air quality monitoring equipment
F Experience of analysing and presenting outputs of air quality data/models to a range of audiences

Method of teaching and learning

Lecture sessions, supported by field work, class notes and laboratory sessions.
