This module introduces students to the concepts and environmental science behind agriculture and food production. Students will be educated in environmental behaviors of common contaminants from agricultural activities and how those chemicals affect food production and quality and the ecosystem. The contemporary topics of food and environmental health and sustainable agriculture are also covered, and the module will conclude by examining particular case studies that best reflect the complexities of how the environment interact with modern agriculture.

Learning outcomes 
A Demonstrate the linkages between agriculture, the environment, food security and safety, and the challenges in traditional and modern agriculture.

B Consider how major and emerging environmental threats affect food safety and security.

C Appraise the various roles of traditional vs sustainable agriculture and how these contribute to a safe and secure food supply.

D. Analyze the influence of agricultural activities on soil and water quality critically

E. Perform comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different management strategies in the agriculture and how these affect food safety outcomes.

F. Decipher the reasonability and potential risks of agricultural inputs, including fertilizers, pesticide, medicine, and genetic breeding.

G Investigate the environmental influences on the global food supply chain and food safety.
Method of teaching and learning 
Various teaching methods will apply in this module, including lectures, role-play presentation, hands-on practical and field trip. In the role-play presentation, students will play as an expert on a certain subject to explain the subject for the “audiences”. The students will learn the main aspects of traditional agriculture in the practical and experience sustainable agriculture in the field trip.

*Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.
